Today's Story Highlights

Grumbling Begins Over Facebook's Promoted Post Scheme
Facebook has a new offer for users with $7 in their pocket -- they can
use that cash to pay to promote their own posts on the social network.
The social network already uses a complex algorithm to determine which
posts appear on any given News Feed. With Facebook's new feature,
though, users can pay $7 to ensure the posts they consider most
newsworthy, such as news about a charity, big announcement or
significant life event, will get more eyeballs.

Make a Handy Little Android PC for Light Lifting
As many of us are gearing up for Windows 8's imminent release, it may
well be worth considering some alternatives. I don't know about you, but
after XP to Windows 7, via Vista, the idea of another OS from Microsoft,
while not yet causing night sweats, is engendering some trepidation.

The Next Apple TV Shouldn't Be a TV at All
Apple's entire Apple TV "hobby" has been weighing heavily on my mind.
Why? There's so much potential for packed-in awesomeness that it
tantalizes a guy's neurons, especially as the fall TV season kicks into
high gear. And danger. Oh baby, there's a lot of potential for danger.
Apple isn't immune to missteps -- nor was it even when Steve Jobs was
masterfully in full command.

Sandia Labs' MegaDroid Plays Security War Games
Sandia National Laboratories announced on Tuesday that it has set up a
network of 300,000 Android virtual handheld computing devices to study
large networks of smartphones. The project, called "MegaDroid," is
expected to result in a software tool that will let other
cyber-researchers model similar environments and study the behavior of
smartphone networks.

From Noobs to Experts: Is There an ABC for Linux Distros?
"To every thing there is a season," as the old saying goes, and "a time
to every purpose under the heaven." Can the same be said for Linux
distros? That is the question that's been on many Linux bloggers' minds.
Specifically, "What Distros Have You Used, in What Order?" was the title
of the Ask Slashdot post that got the conversational ball rolling, and
it was a provocative one.
